eBay Basics

It's not as difficult as you might think to get started on eBay. The first thing you want to do is establish a good reputation. The only way to do that is to build up what is called feedback.

On every transaction, once it is completed, you should leave feedback for the other party in a timely manner. To build up your feedback in the beginning, you are going to have to spend a bit of money and be a buyer. You may not realize all the everyday items you can find to purchase. Do a search for your favorite shampoo to see if someone bought it by mistake or look for your favorite author to see if you missed any of her older books. You get your first "star" by your eBay ID once you have hit 10 positive feedbacks. The more transactions you are able to put under your belt before you start selling the better.

This is because the foundation of eBay is based on trust. As a buyer, I am going to pay you for the item and shipping and once you receive payment, you will send me the item. Your feedback gives me some indication that I can rely on your word to deliver my purchase. The higher your feedback is usually reflected in how high your bids go. If you are selling me a collectible Puss N Boots cookie jar from the 1940s and you have less than 10 transactions in your feedback -- I may not bid as high because I do not want to risk my money.

Once you have shown yourself to be a good buyer, then it is time to sell. Unless you are used to HTML coding, then I recommend using eBay's free service called Turbo Lister or another listing program. If your auction is pleasing to the eye, the more people will be inclined to read all you have to say about your item and there is less chance of a misunderstanding.

Please - no jarring colors, flashing text or music. There are some people who do not mind those things, but the majority of folks will be annoyed and your goal is to sell your stuff for the most money.

You will need to take time and practice whatever method you choose. You need to make a good first impression and if your listing is ugly to begin with then the odds are against someone even reading the description. If the program you use has a tutorial or training section, please work through it two or three times to make sure you've got it down pat.

As a buyer, you should have by now opened a Paypal account. There are several different types of accounts. If you are serious about making a business life selling on eBay, then your only real options are for a Premier or Business account. You will need to take credit cards. People spend more when they don't have to use their own immediate cash to do it. Aren't you willing to bid a bit higher knowing you can use your credit card to pay it later?

Now, let's figure out what to sell.
